Eric's Monthly Recommendation - Books on Music

12/2007
This month I would like to recommend Orff Schulwerk Today by Jane Frazee. It is addressed to all music teachers who want to develop clarity of purpose in a child-centred educational environment. It presents a fresh synthesis of doing and understanding that encourages students to express themselves in – and realise themselves through – music.

06/2007
This month I recommended Hindemith's A Concentrated Course in Traditional Harmony. In contrast to many textbooks written by academic musicians, these were produced by a man who could play every instrument of the orchestra, could compose a satisfying piece for almost every kind of ensemble, and who was one of the most stimulating teachers of his day.

05/2007
This month I recommended Beethoven's Variations for Piano op. 34 - Genesis - Structure - Performance edited by Thomas Ertelt and Conny Restle
Although equal temperament became the standard temperament in the 18th century, unequal temperaments continued to exist until the early 19th century. Taking Beethoven's Op. 34 as an example, Mark Lindley explains his method of interpretation.

04/2007
This month I recommended Vocal Warm-ups by Klaus Heizmann.
These creative exercises do more than just warm up the voice: they help to relax the body, train the ear and develop an awareness of dynamics and rhythm.

02/2007
This month I recommended The Classic FM Pocket Book of Trivia.
Did you know that Handel and Hendrix lived in the same house? Or that Schubert’s nickname was "the little mushroom"? Music is full of these surprising little facts which rarely make it into the history books. But here’s a book that puts this right.

01/2007
This month I recommended The Composer's Handbook by Bruce Cole. Anyone who can pick up a pencil can draw. Anyone who can sing or play an instrument can compose. The Composer's Handbook is a step-by-step guide to the composition of melody, harmony, form and texture.

12/2006
This month I recommended Rhythm Coach by Richard Filz. This little book with CD is packed full of everything you need to get rhythmically fit. Not just a "hands-on" booklet - feet and voice join in too! It will stimulate, energise and liberate - building confidence and a strong sense of pulse.

11/2006
This month I recommended Read Music From Scratch and Write Songs From Scatch - Can't read or write music? No problem!

Read Music From Scratch:  A complete guide to reading music for beginners.  Clear, easy to use and written by experts.  Read Music from Scratch is the ideal choice for any beginner - or anyone who teaches beginners. Published by Boosey & Hawkes in association with Classic FM.

Write Songs From Scatch:  A complete guide to creating songs for aspiring songwriters.
Ever wanted to write your own song?
Ever wondered what it is that you love about some songs yet hate about others?
This book will show you… Published by Boosey & Hawkes.

10/2006
